Vital Energi have offered two students from Leeds College of Building, apprenticeship positions working on the Leeds PIPES scheme after impressing project managers during a trial working period.

Working with Leeds College of Building’s Work Placement Officers, eight full-time students were chosen to experience working on a live site for a period of 4 weeks in the hope of being selected to fill the two apprenticeships on offer.

The opportunity began when Vital visited the college and met with the team to discuss the training opportunities that the Leeds PIPES project has created, which is part of Vital’s commitment to Leeds. It was decided that Vital would employ two apprentices from the college following a trial placement, a process which started with the students attending an interview.

During the placement the students worked alongside Vital’s installation team installing new heating brackets and pipework in the Lincoln Green area, whilst being able to experience the daily operations of a real-life site environment.

After a successful trial period, two of the students, Connor Jolley and Daniel Fyfield, were offered apprenticeships with Vital as a result of their performance. Daniel explained, “I am grateful for this opportunity from Vital Energi to be able to gain knowledge and experience whilst working alongside an experienced workforce in the industry.’’

Rob Falcon, Project Director commented, “We are carrying out a range of commitments to make sure the Leeds city region fully benefit from the Leeds PIPES project. We are pleased to be able to offer local students from Leeds College of Building hands-on work placements on a project taking place in their own city. As a result, the scheme has gained two more valuable team members and the students can benefit from onsite training and experience.”

It has been great for Vital to work with Leeds College of Building to attract talented apprentices to the project. Meanwhile, the other students can now include this work experience on their CV’s which will be of great benefit to help start their careers.
